I have re-opened this page to a limited number of email notes to me. Several have come in that I felt had not been discussed in the past I hope they are enlightening.

Allright already, ENOUGH of the WHY is the 10 Soooo anemic nowadays? The load data from several sources (See load data pages) is getting nearer to the original Norma specs of the 200 grain 1200 fps. velocity design point, but others STILL are dropping power loads in their manuals.

For those of you concerned with "Black Helicopters" and other suspicious activity (real or imagined) I don't think this page will be enlightening, but for those of you with an inquisitive mind.... read on.

The saga STILL continues... Recently I put an addition to my load data pages, and the manufacturer CLEARLY lowered the power curve of just about ALL the 10 loads, as well as dropping some. I was puzzled by this, given that several other manufacturers were keeping high powered loads as published data.

I wrote them a note, and asked if the dropping of power was due to legal concerns, or REAL danger to users. To date several weeks later I have NOT received a reply.

This is disturbing me. I hold IN MY HAND, one powder load book with 200 grain loads over 1265 fps! This powder, in a recent load book is SUBSTANTIALLY lower, down to below 1150 fps.

Now, I'm no ballistic expert, and I don't claim to know EVERYTHING about the 10mm, but there are only a few things that could cause this down trend to occur (my comments in RED), some of them are:

Powder lot changes.
- Since at least one manufacturer I know of stores their powder SUBMERGED IN WATER for decades at a time to do lot burn comparison studies, I SERIOUSLY doubt lot to lot instability of this magnitude can occur. If this instability WERE possible, I don't see why all the discussion about TAGGANTS in powders is causing Sooo much complaining... I mean, would a little INERT taggant force MORE stability by introducing a STABLE element into an UNSTABLE compound mix???
SAAMI pressure drops.
- I have no documented change of the 37,500 psi SAAMI specification in any of my records. As a matter of fact, no load book I read approached that spec, probably due in part for allowing some variability in components, and temperature of loads under development and use variations.
Weak Guns
- While all guns are NOT created equal, and I don't think all designs are equally robust, ALL guns MUST pass proof testing beyond SAAMI maximum pressures. So this should NOT be an issue.
Legal Advice
- We MAY have a case here where some college boys know the courtroom better than reloading, and could recommend a safer position for their principal. Also the powder/bullet manufacturer MAY have had a lawsuit previously, and they are "gunshy" about certain power levels. If this is true, perhaps teaching Kindergarten is a better business to be in.
Component variations
- 10mm brass and components have NOT changed, other than a trend toward manufacturing lighter bullets.
Reloading vs. Handloading
- I'd LIKE to see a HANDLOADING manual from ALL of the manufacturers. WHY? Because RELOADING a case over and over, will cause eventual weakness in key areas of brass cases, and HANDLOADING NEW brass ONCE, SHOULD provide a better margin of safety.
A "Government Conspiracy"
- First there is NO legal limit on power available in SUB .50 caliber bullets. Second while it may be possible that some government agency would LIKE to see weaker power cartridges available, we see no such powering down of far superior cases like the .44 mag, .45 Win mag, and others.
There we have most of the possible (not including some way out Government intervention conspiracy thing) reasons for the powering down of the 10, and the one that gets MY vote is.... number 4. We have become a society, so cautious, and irresponsible, we look to blame everyone else for our own foolishness, and stupidity, and refuse to take our own involvement in ANYTHING as a crucial element in our safety.
