To get your hunt on these pages, please provide me with Animal size/weight/species, terrain, weather, distance, autopsy results, bullet weight, firearm used and anything else relevant to the hunt.

You can keep it short, or embellish it ala Outdoor life, but I'm going to make a synopsis out of it to keep it short. Inital word is I'm going to get lots of response to this page, and I'll need to keep the text down to relevant facts.

Ed. Note: My Mom once told me: "Because a thing CAN be done, doesn't mean a thing SHOULD be done" I think bear hunting with a 10 is one of those things that should not be done.

2 years ago me and two clients were sitting around camp at about 9:30 P.M. in early July, as you know in Alaska we have sun 24/7 at that time of the year so things are generally relaxed.

After a few cocktails and fishing stories we were sitting around the campfire planning out the next days events. When I heard the distinctive "WOOF" of a bear. Being a guide for 10 years has taught me NEVER to not have my firearm within arms reach. As I look over my shoulder I notice a rather large male Black Bear standing at the corner of our wall tent. I calm the guests and proceed to yell at the bear and try to shoo it away. It worksfor the first few minutes but this is a hungry persistant bear. (The river is pretty far inland and few salmon make the trip)He comes back a few times throuighout the night and I am successful of deterring him by spreading gasoline around the camp. (THEY HATE THE SMELL) but the next morning as I am preparing my boat the big boy gets in between me and the camp i.e. between me and my clients.

I am now in a moral and ethical dilemma do I pester the bear or run the risk of people getting hurt. I yell at the bear and throw a log at his backside. He runs a few feet away then turns and runs straight at me. I hold my ground as I have been false charged before but none the less draw down with my Glock 20 10mm he gets about 10 feet away and stops then stands up. After standing he put his ears back and started walking straight at me. I fired twice (double tap) and he dropped instantly. The Bear skinned out at 6.3" square and weighed in at approximatly 500 lbs.

After calming myself down and making sure that the bear is actually dead I call in the State Troopers. We skinned the blackie and to my amazement both shots penetrated through the back of the bears skull. The first shot (presumably) passed through the skull and lodged in the left lung. The second shot passed through the skull and fragmented. One fragment lodged in the shoulder area and the other clipped its spinal cord.
